Self Image & Self Worth are very important values for someone to have. These values include: How you see yourself, your ideas on yourself, the traits you think you have, and how you perceive other people seeing you. Self-esteem also plays a very important role in this. Someone can either have low or high self-esteem. When one’s self-esteem is low, they lack confidence about who they are and what they can do. They often feel incompetent, unloved, and/or inadequate. People who struggle with low self-esteem are consistently afraid about making mistakes or letting other people down. On the other hand, a person with high self-esteem is happy with their life or what they are doing. Though, self-esteem acts as a double edged sword. This is due to many accounts of high self-esteem relating to people being overly boastful or arrogant as well as thinking too highly of themselves.
Self-image refers to how we see ourselves both internally and externally. It is mainly based on our perceptions of reality; these perceptions are built over a lifetime and continue to change as we do. Because of this, we have full control and influence over these perceptions yet many will find it difficult to manipulate them.
Self worth is referring to the feeling that you believe you are good enough, and that you deserve love and respect from others. People with strong self worth can also think that they are deserving of love and respect from others as well as deserving to be happy. They know that they are worth it, and anything they put their mind to is achievable. Unlike self-esteem, self-worth can only be achieved with confidence, not arrogance. Someone with a strong self-worth must be happy about who they are and what they have. In result, they will view themself favorably and have faith of their ability to set and achieve their goals as well as telling themself that they are deserving of good things because they believe in themself.
