Richard Reed Marshall, also known as Joe Don Dickey, was known to use multiple names and listed several different birth dates over time in his various jobs. This behavior, combined with a few other unusual coincidences, drew attention to him as a possible Zodiac suspect. Perhaps the strangest coincidence that linked Marshall to the Zodiac was that one of the Zodiac’s letters was mailed on the day of Marshall’s 45th birthday. The Zodiac was known to match dates up in this way which raised suspicions on Marshall but could always just have been chance. In an email sent by Marshall, behaviors similar to the Zodiac were exhibited. These behaviors included the tendency to overreact to what he perceived as lies or slights, nitpicking over small details, and displaying an oddly specific interest in Zodiac-related events. This email also included the mention of an attorney. This raised eyebrows as Zodiac himself referenced attorneys in multiple of his letters. However, mentioning an attorney is not unique to either Marshall and the Zodiac, making this connection tenuous at best. While some of this evidence is intriguing, the evidence posed against Richard Reed Marshall is largely circumstantial. There is no physical evidence or any definitive link tying him to the Zodiac crimes. The few coincidences mentioned, such as the shared birthday mailing date, are not enough to establish a concrete connection between the two. In addition to this, investigators eventually deemed his quirks and behaviors as insufficient to consider him a serious Zodiac suspect.
