The Throne of Fire is a book by Rick Riordan and is the second book in the series called The Kane Chronicles. There are many major characters in the book. The protagonists are: Carter Kane, Satie Kane, Michel Desjardins, Amos Kane, Bast, Anubis, Horus, Isis, Zia Rashid, Bes, and many more. The main antagonists are Vladimir Menshikov, the third most powerful magician in the world, and Apophis, the god of chaos. Over the story, Carter and Sadie Kane, who are the main two protagonists in the story, develop a lot in the story. Through the story, Carter and Sadie become stronger and learn even more powerful magic. They also lose many friends of theirs and have to sacrifice a lot to achieve success. They also find out about devastating things about people who are close to them. At the end of the story, Carter and Sadie are almost completely different characters because they have now lost many close ones and find out about friends who might die in the future. The main antagonist is Apophis Vladimir Menshikov. Apophis is the god of chaos and is trying to break out of its prison and swallow the sun so chaos can rule the world. The plot of The Throne of Fire is as follows. The book starts off where Carter and Sadie have recruited kid magicians to learn the path of the gods. All that Carter and Sadie know is that they will be in danger in 5 days. They know that Apophis will come and try to swallow the sun. They must find the 3 books of Ra and go into the Duat to get Ra back. They need Ra because he is the only god powerful and ancient enough to defeat Apophis. As they are trying to get the scrolls and Ra back, Carter and Sadie make many friends and even more enemies. The story takes place all over the world as the characters travel everywhere and go on a journey across the world teleporting to different countries. Some of the places Carter and Sadie went to were Russia, the Duat, and a tomb. Rick Riordan often uses Egyptian words to allow the main characters to use spells such as ha di which means destroy. An important quote in the novel is, “Sometimes you have to lose a piece to win a game” (Riordan 393). This shows how the story is full of loss and sacrifice. The quote is about Bes, the dwarf god who accompanies the Kanes through almost their entire adventure to save the world. He has to sacrifice himself to win a game so Carter and Sadie can continue their journey. This quote is also very powerful because it is true. I recommend this book to people who enjoyed the Percy Jackson series and the Heroes of Olympus series or anyone who likes Rick Riordan or mythology. This book is very interesting but I do not recommend it to people who want a fast paced book because this novel is spaced and is over five hundred pages long. It does get better as the story goes on with more action the further you get in the book. I would rate this book a 10/10 because I enjoyed reading it and I plan to read the next book in the Kane Chronicles series called The Serpent’s Shadow.
